I have many times been highly annoyed by the fact that one of my "real-world" 
audio devices failed to reset the volume to something more reasonable on 
startup and instead either blasted away at much too high volume or was barely 
audible. I would want anything that controls volume to initialize itself to 
sane, configurable values on startup.
