That with the textbox I think is a good idear, but I have a second.   :)

It you are in the permissinsdialog you can use the "Einfg" (I don't know the 
name on the english keybord) key to view a small frame over the 
permissionsdialog with a small textbox, too. In that textbox you can enter 
directly chmod commands like u+x and so on to set the permissions. And after 
you have entert your command pass that command to the permissions on the 
dialog.
I think that was a funktion for people like admins or so on.   :)     So I use 
only a key to go to that dialog and no other user see that option. So you can 
change the permissions with the keybord and the chmod syntax mutch faster.

I think it is a bit more to code but I think it was usefull and we can write 
about that something in the doc's   :)
