Did I understand this correctly?

*  user selects the permissions my mouse click --> octal number changes

*  user changes octal number --> visual permissions change accordingly


If that's what you have done, I like it: this would lead to the user
understand what each of the bits means and how the octal code can be
used to quickly set permissions.

In the beginning she would just set them by mouse, as it was before,
but after a while she perhaps would notice how much faster it would
be by entering the ocal code - which she had learned on-the-fly by
seeing your lineedit showing the octal digits corresponding to her
choice.

Sounds like a good idea to me: Adds more flexibility without /forcing/
the user to follow the new or the old way.  :-)
