Nope. It'll default to writing XftConfig files - so yes if the system doesn't 
have Xft then it's creating this needlessly. *But* this is how the current 
KControl module works - so this is *not* a defficiency of kio_fonts. If there 
is a way to check for the abscence of any Xft (1 or 2) mechanism then yes 
both Kcmfontinst and kio_fonts (and the current "fonts" KControl module, btw) 
should disable the writing of an Xftconfig/fonts.conf file.

Yet again an argumentative - and ill informed - response.
