Linux also has a tmpfs and FWIW my system has the following line
in /etc/init.d/boot.local:

  mount -t tmpfs tmpfs /tmp

Huh? What keeps you from using /var/tmp under Linux? Again cited from fhs.txt:

 "The /var/tmp directory is made available for programs that require
  temporary files or directories that are preserved between system
  reboots.  Therefore, data stored in /var/tmp is more persistent than
  data in /tmp."

I din't know the KDETMP environment variable until yesterday. It does
indeed solve this problem.
