Does your car know how far a kilometer is? Or how long an hour is? Kilometers 
per hour obviouly aren't natural units for it to communicate it. Shouldn't it 
just show its velocity in revolutions of the drive axle per second, then?

The point is to hide these icky details from the user, not to propagate them.
