The only time I have noticed people in IT use 1000 is in reference to
hard drives. Hard drive boxes even include the statement that 1 MB =
1,000,000 bytes since it is nonstandard.  Memory, CD Media, and all
other things mentioning sizes use 1024 as far as I have seen.  I do
recall many years ago seeing CD Media rated for 680MB (1000), but since
then all I have seen are 650MB discs (1024).
