SIMPLE (http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/simple-charter.html) is the competing standard and will probably reach RFC status this year. It also has some weight because the MSN client already seems to supports it and the FCC forces AOL to switch AIM to SIMPLE if they ever want to offer "next generation IM services" (voice, video). This was the condition for taking over the Warner Cable net. And beside that SIMPLE is compatible to SIP, so many VoIP gateways and IP phones like the ones from Cisco can already interoperate with SIMPLE.
