kio_sftp requires the sftp subsystem to be installed on the server, surprise. 
kio_fish does not, and yes, I've come across some machines w/o sftp 
installed:

Request for subsystem 'sftp' failed on channel 0
Couldn't read packet: Connection reset by peer

Also, kio_fish seems to properly use public key authentication when possible, 
while kio_sftp keeps asking for a password.
