You might be interested in kxconfig, the Caldera configuration tool for 
XFree86 4.x. It's a stand-alone KDE-program and licenced under the GPL. See 
ftp://ftp.caldera.com/pub/OpenLinux3.1.1/Workstation/SRPMS/kxconfig-0.9.4-1.src.rpm 
for the source code.
