I think it comes down to someone realised how hard these sort of things are to
write so we are hunting for a way that it has allready been done. It has,
bc, to a limited extent, Octave, a more powerful extent and GiNaC to a more
toolkit extent. I am sure freshmeat has more, but I think unless you are a
graduate math student hunting for a thesus you will want to stear clear of
this land. I have used Octave a few times in projects for some
simplifications of Shroedinger Equations, that was handy but I am not sure we
want to tie into one toolkit, because they all have strengths and weeknesses.

Anyone completeing freshman year of CS can tell you that life sucks without
tools like matlab and mathmatica, so dont be too overzelous in your
opensource arguments. After doing at least one Laplace by hand you will beg
for a tool to help. After 2 weeks of trying to use Octave or some other
opensource tool you will by crying even harder for Mathmatica. I have seem
some neat tricks in ptyhon though to to laplace transforms very nice though,
but that is not the point here.

Either way I would contact the authors of GiNaC I am sure they would be
willing to help.
