As far as I can tell, the sounds have no practical benefit. They are there to
make the KDE experience (tm) stimulate more senses. A black and white app
might be just as functional as a colour app, but the colour app is more
interesting. Similarly a silent desktop may be just as functional as an
aural one, but less interesting. I mean, the sounds have gone _way_ past
providing the user with feedback and into the 'this is cool' realm.
So, I think anything that adds interest is pretty much ok. Since every user I
know turns the sounds off very shortly after their first login, the best
thing might be something impressive/sci fi. OTOH, perhaps if the sounds was
shorter and less obtrustive then people would leave it running.

Given KDE takes the best part of a minute to log in (here anyway), the sound
could actually be useful as a 'your desktop is ready to use'. But again, only
if it wasn't obtrustive.

I think resolution type sounds make sense because I think the login task is so
long it deserves to be resolved on its own ;-). If midi was a little bit more
pleasant sounding it would be make some sense to start a piece at the start
of login and continue it through startkde. Unfortunatly this requires
starting arts, which requires ... so it is a bit hard to get it at the start
of the sequence.
