I noticed this by accident:
Enter an url that starts with a dot, e.g. .blah in konqueror's url line, and 
it freezes. Now I saw that konqueror made http//.blah from it. So I checked 
if it's konq or something else, and in fact all KDE apps also freeze in the 
file dialog if I specify http://.xyz (or any other protocol like ftp://.xyz) 
in the upper combo box.
