True, but autofs/automount don't handle things like automatically launching kscd if they detect an audio CD or kpackage if they're detecting an install CD. I'm not sure whether or not that "feature" is actually a good thing (think of the possibilities for trojans), but people have come to expect it from Windoze, and for a total newbie, it certainly makes sense to launch an installer the moment they insert the CD (so they don't have to figure out how to do it manually).
