I had this exact problem on MDS 8.0/8.1 the fix was to upgrade to a newer version of \
lesstif/lesstif-devel which puts its files in /usr/X11R6 (IIRC). The older versions \
put stuff in /mumbly/Motif2.0 (adn similar locations) and the libraries in those \
directories seem to contain no symbols!

To see if this is the case for you, try:

nm /mumbly/Motif2.0/lib/*
