There is, just not in the linker line which I quoted ;)

no difference. perfectly reproduceable all the time. It looks like although 
the mmxidct_asm.lo is listed in the linker line, it doesn't seem to hit the 
actual lib. 

Or this is a kind of symbol mangling problem. Or its the "subdirs do not 
work with automake" kind of problem :-(

its perfectly reproduceable if you install automake 1.5.
