Hi!
While reading RFC's for KMime I came across the fact that x-* MIME-types
are deprecated (rfc2048 - MIME Part 4: Registration procedures).
Proprietary mime types should be registered under the vnd. tree. Should
we try to collect all KDE-specific mime types under vnd.kde.*? Eg.
app/x-kword -> app/vnd.kde.kword
app/x-kchart -> app/vnd.kde.kchart
and change all x-* types for which an equivalent type under vnd. exists
to that vnd. type (or one that has been made already)?
audio/x-mp3 -> audio/mpeg
app/x-zip -> app/zip
Also, since koffice files are only tar.gz'ed, for mail transfer to
non-koffice users, it would be nice to define how they are to be
transported in multipart/related body parts.
The big advantage to have our mimetypes in IANA's registry is that they
are visible to other implementors. No x-* types are included in the
registry (because they're supposed to be reserved for private use).

As a result [of the DMCA], Mr. Sklyarov faces a total of five counts;
if found guilty, he could be sentenced to 25 years in prison and a
$2.25 million dollar fine. In other words, he could be a guest of the
U.S. prison system long after the mere armed robbers, rapists, and
child molesters are allowed back into society. -- lwn.net 2001/08/30
