parsing error. In what way can anything I said "work"? Or do you mean,
that now you can't simply reindent by changing the tabwidth? No, of course
not, because tabwidth is eight, and not changeable ;)

What you seem to want is a character <ind> with a semantic like "only
usable as the first characters of a line, and moving the cursor
<indent-with> characters to the right". This would indeed be a useful
character, but unfortunately <tab> isn't quite that thing, although
sometimes used like it.
