The <tab> character sets the cursor to the next tab-stop column, which God
intented to be on columns == 0 mod 8. Whoever sets <tab> to mean other
than 8 spaces (if inserted in column 0) is the real wacko, and programmers
writing editors permitting such non-sense should be doomed. I don't want
to say on a public forum what should happen to the person who invented the
term 'tabwidth'. ;-))

Just use editors capable of auto-indenting and back-indenting. In emacs or
vi I nearly never have to press space or backspace for indenting purposes.
Ciao,
Michael.
