from libtool --help --mode=link:
  -rpath LIBDIR     the created library will eventually be installed in
LIBDIR
  -R[ ]LIBDIR       add LIBDIR to the runtime path of programs and
libraries    

Note that it does not say that -R is correct for both programs and
libraries. And -rpath only to specify the final dir for a library. That
also is the result of my tests. (well, -rpath happen to work for programs
and not for libraries, but I think that is for backward compatibility
between multi-language-branch of libtool and released versions)
