my vertical panel, which contains three popupapplets, now has a large space 
(about 1.5 icons' worth) between the last icon and the cashew at the bottom. 
if I try to force it smaller, the poor pastedbin icon starts to shrink but the 
blank space stays.

could this blank space be your spacer?
