Gwenview is an image viewer for KDE. It is part of Extragear's Graphics and has prebuilt packages available for most distributions. It shares the KIPI plugin Interface with Digikam, KPhotoAlbum and ShowImg. I recommend trying out KIPI as well if you use any of those applications.

+

Get Started!

+

Once installed you should find it in KMenu + Graphics, or something similar. Alternatively you can launch it at the command line, optionally with an image as an argument.

+ + + + + +

Main Window

+ +You will be presented with the main window. If you find yourself in view mode you can click "browse" above the location bar. Clockwise from top-left you will find the tree window, icon window, and the preview window. More on the preview window later!
+ + + + +

Time to Edit!

+ +Right clicking a file in the icon window will allow you to sort, copy, move or delete files. You will also be able to use external tools like The GIMP to edit your images!
+ + + +In the context menu you are presented with you can choose "External Tools"+"The GIMP" to open an image and edit it. Or you can add your own external tools in "Settings" + "Configure External Tools".
+ + + +

More Fun

+ +Use the green arrows above the preview window to rotate the image clockwise or counter clockwise. Or zoom in to fit the window size.
+ + + +Navigate to a video file and select it and the preview window will help you identify it! This was very helpful to me in my quest to organize my download folder, stocked with random photos, videos, and even zipped icon sets! It's use of KDE's KIO Slaves also allow network transparency of folders on other machines, such as ftp sites, although KIO Slaves are too advanced for this article.
+ + + +Don't forget to try the Fullscreen and Slideshow buttons above the location bar. They are self explanatory, but round off Gwenview to create a very useful App of the Month!
