I honestly believe it's safe enough. It's not like repaint invalidation 
optimizations which are risky and long term buggers.
Here the optimization is only attempted and falls back to normal layouting if 
proved wrong. 
It's heavy only in the sense that it saves a *lot* of processing when it does 
work :)

Nevertheless I'm already hard at testing, and will deactivate it before 
release (the 1st, I believe?) in case anything suspect shows up in the coming 
few days.
