Read the entire thread, Ossi :-)

Mario committed a fix for HAL-detection which included a line like the 
first one above. I replied saying it wouldn't work (and it doesn't on a 
shell), but Mario reminded me that configure.in.in isn't pure sh, but 
instead is processed by m4 first.
