another big patch that i want to backport for 3.4.1. well, actually, the
first step, there'll be another patch after this that completes the
operation.

introduces a non-GUI option to not remove buttons when their backing files
disappear (just disables them).

start of the infrastructure necessary to auto-bring-back buttons from the
dead when their .desktop file disapears then reappears, e.g. when upgrading
kicker while kicker is running and your upgrade first deletes all the 
.desktop files =/
