If #notepads == 2 then obviously "2 notepads saved" will be written 
instead of "Two notepads saved", so why make an exception for 1/one? 
Moreover numbers are much easier to read than words.

Compare
"Removed one old message from folder foo."
with
"Removed 1 old message from folder foo."
