If you look at kate's "modern" mode, I think it is default since 3.1,
you will see that it almost is capable of an idea like mode. The
kdockwidgets on my harddrive already support  overlapping the main
view,  just like the mode in gideon and switching back to the non
overlapping mode. There is only a little cleanup needed and one class
has to be moved from kate to kdelibs, kdeutils or kmdi (to make it
usable everywhere).

The only really big thing still needed is an integration of that into
the kmdi framework eg for the mode switching. I haven't looked into that
yet. If you like, you could do that once I've committed my stuff.
