besides, nowadays modern alsa supports software synths plugging in at the 
alsa level (timidity has this support, as does iiwusynth). Then you can 
treat them just like hardware synths, so carrying around our own version of 
timidity is kinda silly (not to mention this ancient version of timidity 
sounds awful by comparison to recent ones).
