Just to make that clear: "a database" doesn't necessarily mean that you 
need to run some big server in the background. MySQL also exists as an 
embedded "server" that can be linked to KMail. And using MySQL you also 
get a full-text search for free (yes, MySQL supports a real full-text 
search, we use it on bugs.kde.org, too).

Anyway, does your new implementation support database indexes and 
non-database indexes at the same time? I.e. could it happen that IDs 
collide if only a part of my folders are stored in a database?
