Fix for bug in which the disk-based archive files were silently not updated.
They were opened read-only initially, and the file access was not change to
read-write (r+) prior to attempted writes.  I left a bunch of debugging code
in (included only if DEBUG is defined) and some error checking code, in case
the problem doesn't go away.  Note: there is some new i18n text.  This does
NOT need to be translated prior to release of KDE 3.0.
