start kmail on the console with gdb:

gdb /path/to/kmail
gdb> set args -nofork
gdb> run
<kmail runs>

If Kmail quits, you're back at the gdb prompt:

<reason for quitting is here>
gdb> bt
<backtrace goes here>

If KMail freezes, enter on the command line

kill -6 <pid of kmail>
This will give a backtrace in Dr. Konqi.
