konqueror supports many protocols (http, ftp,file cdrom,smb), but user can't see anywhere what protocols are supported. 
if there is dropdown menu in begin of the addressbar, user can just select default protocol to use. 

it would be nice if the every protocol can have own homepage (file://~home , ftp://ftp.myisp.vom/~home ), 
different default actions ( http:// opens text files in konqueror , file:// opens in default editor ) and
different view modes (in http:// only one window,  ftp:// 2-part window, file:// with root-window)
