We use the standard dnd protocol under X11, its called XDND. If 
GNOME fails to follow standards, its fortunately not "our" problem. 

Try the Qt drag'n'drop example. it'll show you the mimetype and the charset 
that is dnd'ed. it might be that they just send an incorrect or nonstandard 
mimetype. in such a case we could add a workaround. 

if they continue to use motif dnd, well, its their problem.
