I'm sorry, I didn't work,
kppp is now:

compi:/opt/kde/bin # ll kppp
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root root 3745587 Apr 4 22:47 kppp

but I got the same:

jochen@compi:~ > strace -o /tmp/kppp.strace kppp
KCrash: crashing.... crashRecursionCounter = 2
KCrash: Application Name = kppp path = <unknown>

luckily I tried kppp again, without anything else and I got a backtrace:

0x40a7e3f9 in __wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6
#0 0x40a7e3f9 in __wait4 () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x40adb638 in __DTOR_END__ () from /lib/libc.so.6
#2  0x402f8140 in KCrash::defaultCrashHandler () at kcrash.cpp:205
#3 0x40a1c998 in __restore ()
    at ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/i386/sigaction.c:127
#4 0x8076649 in main (argc=1, argv=0xbffff6e4) at main.cpp:321

if that helps.

So the correct reason for this crash was in /etc/group:
 dialout:x:16:rootjochen,bini,dumm
instead of the correct version:
 dialout:x:16:root,jochen,bini,dumm

I still don't know how the hell the entry had changed.

Jochen
