OK, after browsing thru the khtml source, I found that you went quite
a long way to implement the exact behaviour I reported as a bug. ;-)
And the argument at the top of class KCharset has some weight.

But then again, the "fixed" unicode font coming with X11 is really not
usable for web display.

So what about a config option, to given either the font family or the
font charset priority?
