I don't think it's dying because of the ^@. Seems like some servers
don't send anything useful, therefore the garbage. But the message
itself is not necessarily an indication for a failure. Where does it
happen anyway ? The above log doesn't show anything bad.

P.S. Is kppp working well on Debian otherwise ? There where some
problems at the beginning since pppd isn't installed with o+x. Are log
fails read at the correct position.
