Visit www.amazon.com, put something into your shopping card and proceed to
checkout, enter your your login and password (if you have one, else make
something up), and click on "sign in using our secure server".

You are presented the address step, which has an https: URL, but is not
encrypted. You will not have gotten an error message.

SSL works elsewhere: www.comdirect.de -> direct brokerage works (as far as
encrpting the session is concerned).

I tried w/
1.) all ciphers and protocols enabled,
2.) SSLv2 and all SSLv3 ciphers <128bits disabled
3.) use TLS instead of SSL enabled.

System: Mandrake 7.2 w/ RPMs from ftp.kde.org
Kernel: 2.2.17-21mdk
Compiler: gcc 2.96

Marc
