Having fallen into the same trap, I have may be a solution.

The problem is that the user that cannot start KWord has a local copy of 
the (old) file "kword.desktop" in his .kde directory tree. So after the new 
"kword.desktop" file is installed on the system, the user's old local copy 
still takes precedence and this copy is really missing the 
"X-KDE-NativeMimeType" entry. Therefore the error!

The local copy is in the directory: ~/.kde/share/applnk/Office

Deleting (or just renaming for testing) the old local copy is sufficient. 
(May be a restart of KDE is needed, I have done this procedure without KDE 
running!)

NOTE: be careful that the local copy could have contained additional 
information added by the user.
