The filter only allows me to select floating/recurring events. While I am confinced you
plan to extend that, I am confused by the GUI in which the options are shown.

I would suggest a set of checkboxes which allow me to set the visibility of things.

[x] Filter on
 Show:
   [x] done todo
   [x] recurring 
   [x] floating
   [x] catagory 1
   [x] catagory 2
   [x] appointments I am owner of.
etc.
