hmm, let me be more explicit :)
i've tried all possible configuration for my samba server (i mean OS level=65 
+prefered master+local master........)
i've even tried to set a NT station which is always the master browser in its 
workgroup as the master browser but it never worked with it
is there a master for all the network or does masters exists only for 
workgroups ? 
so, supposing i'm the master of my workgroup, this is what i get when i run 
smbclient :

as you can see , my server has the list and is always the master (it never 
looses elections since all other computers in my group are win98 computers, 
OS level=33). This is with samba-pre-3 but it was exactly the same with 2.0.7.
i don't think the problem come from libsmb because it works everytime with 
kruiser.
Another interesting thing is that there's an option to compile kdebase with 
smblib support (./configure --with-smb-lib=path), i tried many times (with 
many different options) but configure never found the smblib i compiled :(
so it always came back to the code which comes with the kdebase package.

i know a few about netbios+smb protocol since i develop a program using it 
and i have tried many (many many...) different options in smb.conf ....
what i don't understand is that it works really fine with kruiser (which uses 
the same lib) and all the time.... (even when my samba server is down).
i'm sure the lib is working fine... but what about konqueror ?
