I spent some time looking into this today.

The trouble (with this server at least) is that it claims to support APOP
authentication, but when the pop3 kioslave tries to use APOP authentication
it fails and then the pop server closes the connection.

When I removed the '#define APOP' statement on line 39 of
kdebase/kio/pop3/pop3.cc (and did a make install, and quit kmail and killed
off any pop3 slaves that had been started by kdenint) the slave worked ok.

Daniel can you try this on the flay server you had a problem with? Also what
was the pop server you had trouble with? (I would like to telnet to it to see
what it's response is).

We need to make the use of APOP authentication optional. I wonder if we can
add another line to the pop account configuration dialog and what the text
should be "Use APOP for secure mail download when supported by pop server"
would be correct (the pop slave has some logic so it's smart enough not to
try to do APOP if the server indicates it does not support it) but that text
is too long.

Also George should know about this, but I guess he is still away.

BFN,
Don.
