There is a message in your mail dir that breaks kmail (or mimelib, whatever).
Usually this is in the inbox, as the inbox is opened by kmail on startup.

You could move all the folders from your ~/Mail.old to ~/Mail except
the standard folders: inbox, outbox, sent-mail, trash

Then mv ~/Mail.old/inbox ~/Mail/inbox.old

Of course all with closed kmail :-)
