Hi Kurt,
This is slightly subtle.

This bug is similar to the one patched by Martin Hill (ChangeLog 02-01-98) in which \
kbiff produces hundreds of new 'notify' boxes. I think I'm right in saying that that \
manifested itself as kbiff checking the mailbox at regular intervals and, if it found \
new mail, creating a new 'notify' box irrespective of whether there was another \
'notify' box already there. If, over time, more mail arrived, then the newer boxes \
would say '2 new messages', '3 new messages' etc.

However, this time things are a little more subtle. I went out for lunch and on my \
return, found that I had 5 'notify' boxes, each saying I had '1 new message'. I \
clicked on kbiff's 'new mail' icon and 3 of these windows dissappeared instantly, as \
mentioned in ChangeLog 02-04-98. (Incidentally, shouldn't the year here be 99, or are \
things different in the States?). I retrieved the new mail and found that I actually \
had 5 new messages, not 1. This suggests that a new 'notify' box is being launched \
for each piece of new mail. Furthermore, and without me doing anything, over the \
course of a minute or so, first one and then the other remaining 'notify' box \
dissappeared. Presumably, this is linked to the fact that kbiff checked for the \
existence of new mail, found none and so killed the remaining windows?

Finally, I'd like to tie this up with the bug (#695) about an animated gif not being \
replaced by the 'old mail' icon when clicked on. When I originally clicked on my \
little animation to launch the mail reader, the animation stopped but was not \
replaced. I got my mail and after a few seconds the 2 remaining notify boxes \
dissappeared, but also, the stopped 'new mail' gif was replaced by the 'no mail' xpm. \
Ie the killing of the windows is linked with the update of the icons?

Hope this prooves to be of use,
Best wishes,
Angus
