My solution to this problem is:
Enable opengl offscreen, in this case, using software rendering where instead
of 3000 frames/s I get only 1300 f/s in glxgears, more than enough if not
gaming.
In my case, this is activated using 
export GALLIUM_DRIVER=llvmpipe
export LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1
in ~/.profile
