For some months the external monitor worked fine. Now the problem is back.
Syslog contains the following:

HPD interrupt storm detected on connector DP-2: switching from hotplug
detection to polling

Any more ideas?

I'm running Kubuntu 16.04 (LTS) with Kernel 4.10.40 currently.
