Pardon the delay; I was able to find a backup to work from the last few days.

Copying the files to ~/.local/share/kwalletd does in fact make the wallets
available in kwallet5.  Technically, this doesn't actually fix the issue I
described - opening the wallet file from the File menu - but is a sufficient
workaround.
