            Bug ID: 350805
           Summary: desktop rearranges icons on login
           Product: plasmashell
           Version: 5.3.2
          Platform: Fedora RPMs
                OS: Linux
            Status: UNCONFIRMED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: general
          Assignee: kde@davidedmundson.co.uk
          Reporter: sigut@mail.com
                CC: bhush94@gmail.com, plasma-bugs@kde.org

Since ca. beginning of July 2015 the desktop sometimes decides to rearrange my
icons on login so that most of them are nicely stacked in columns
starting at the left edge of the screen. As I group them on the desktop
according to my idea of a logical arrangement, this means that I have
to rearrange them again.

I am using the Folder View mode on ~/Desktop folder.
Locking the icons doesn't help.
The problem is not reproducible, on a login the probability that the
desktop looks like the last time is about 85%.
Some of the icons stay in place (inside and outside of the nice fresh columns).

OS: Fedora 22

Reproducible: Couldn't Reproduce

In the meantime I have discovered, that the icon arrangement is kept in the
file
~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc. This file is created (or
re-written) on every login. The only difference between the versions is a line
"positions=..." in the following paragraph:

[Containments][20][General]
arrangement=1
iconSize=2
popups=false
positions=13,7,desktop:/abc.def,11,0, ...
previews=false
sortMode=-1

The "positions" line changes on EACH login. Strangely enough, while
the sequence of the "desktop" items changes every time, their content
remains constant, so that (as long as the rearrangement doesn't happen)
the layout of the desktop remains the same.

While playing with it, I noted that if new files get created in the Desktop
directory (while plasma is not being used), on login they are put into empty
spaces following the "columns, left to right" pattern.

That makes me wonder, if there is not a race condition, which (when it
occurs) starts the filling pattern BEFORE the current layout is discovered /
/ fully understood by the part of the system which is writing the
plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc file.
