I agree with comments above. Who doesn't know Xorg internals doesn't know that
"desktop" is really the "root window" and panels are windows themself. 

So "show desktop" for normal users means "show me what is behind applications"
or "free the screen of all application windows". No one cares about "root
window". 

Also I wasn't able to figure out the usefulness of this new feature.
