I spent a little time with this and learned a little more - as mentioned above
the network widget fails in the panel - you can pop it open but you can't
choose a wifi AP or check/uncheck the wifi check box - right click however does
pop up the networkmanagement settings menu

To make things more interesting if you run a widget inside plasma-windowed it
works OK - this kind of points to the panel or the as the culprit that's
snarfing the mouse clicks.

I'd like to debug this but I'm kind of at a loss here as how to proceed - can
anyone recommend a thread I can gdb attach to and a place to set breakpoints?
