Thanks for investigating!

I have tried with kwin 5, but I haven't been able to collect any accurate data
because it seems quite jerky in general.  (If I run glxgears, it drops all
sorts of frames even though I am not doing anything else with the system.) 
Maybe the GPU on that system is just too old now (an Nvidia 8600m GT).
